Thank you for all the updates about Anna May Wong and more new books, stories of Asian women then and now. I think all women that do not fit the American profile have problems even today. And I find it , in a way, comforting for myself as a woman American artist with a strange name and appearance.... even now in 2025. I am not alone, even after so many years.
Ilona, I'm heartened to know that you relate to AMW's story in this way and find comfort in it. You are definitely not alone! Thank you for being one of the newsletter's dedicated readers.
I loved this. Thank you both.
Such a rich conversation! Congratulations Jennie! Thanks for adding to the literary canon on Asian American Hollywood!!!!
I enjoyed this interview of Jennie. It's an excellent book, and the entire Wong family gets to be part of Ruby Chan's adventure.
Why wait for that monster [or monstrous] bio-pic that may, someday, be done about Wong's life? Here's a good, tight narrative.
The narrative is cinematic; 1924 LA is the set.
I couldn't agree more!
