This is exactly what I hoped you would do one day! Fantastic job!!

I’ve been trying to figure out the cemetery situation. I believe Marietta (died in infancy) is also in the same grave. The similarity with Mary/Marietta causes some confusion on sites like FamilySearch. Have you run into this situation?

I think it might have been your comment that inspired this post!

The gravestone has three names written on it in Chinese. One is AMW's and the center name is her mother's. I just checked Mary's Chinese Exclusion files and the third name matches her Chinese name. It's confirmed then that AMW, Lee Gon Toy, and Mary are all buried there.

Fascinating.

OK I just did a deep dive on FamilySearch with Angelus Rosedale burial records. Marietta was originally buried at County Cemetery. It seems she was re-buried in 1931 with her mother. Of course, this happened a good 6 months after Gon Toy’s death as Anna was delayed by her “On the Spot” performances.

All very confusing as so many entries on FS show Marietta as “Mary Etta”.

Anyways… sorry for rambling on.

Keep up the fantastic work!

Thanks for the wonderful context and pics. The damaged 1931 apartment pic-is that at The Nirvana at ~1775 N. Orange, a few blocks from Graumann's?

Hard to say. I'm not familiar with the background in the image, or at least, wherever it was taken in Los Angeles likely doesn't look that way anymore. According to newspaper articles I found, AMW was living at the Castle Argyle when she first returned to LA to film Daughter of the Dragon. The stylized windows look like they might match: https://beacondevgroup.com/locations/castle-argyle/

I've consulted Jack Scott, who's got deep knowledge of LA. He's got some good ideas, and I suspect the view will get tracked down! Archaeology almost!
