Hello again, friends!
It’s less than two weeks to pub day for Not Your China Doll and I’ve got those pre-pub butterflies. Will people like the book? What if no one shows up to my events? How do I stop myself from reading every single customer review?
The biggest question of all: Will people actually buy the book?
To allay some of my worst fears—and to reward those of you who have been here to support the newsletter and the book from the very beginning—I’m running a fun, little pre-order campaign. As many of you know, pre-orders mean a lot in the world of book publishing. They count towards the book’s first week of sales and can help bump the book onto bestseller lists. If you’ve enjoyed the research discoveries, interviews, and think pieces on Asian American representation that I’ve shared in the newsletter over the last three years, the best way to show your love is by pre-ordering the book.
For everyone who pre-orders the book by February 29, I’m giving away a special digital bundle that includes two bonus sections that were ultimately cut from the final version of the book, plus two of my favorite archival interviews with Anna May Wong from early Hollywood movie magazines.
Once you enter the giveaway, you will also have the chance to win a one-of-a-kind Anna May Wong-themed gift box (pictured above) with goodies including:
an autographed copy of Not Your China Doll
Blu-ray DVD edition of Piccadilly
L’heure Bleue eau de toilette by Guerlain, one of the fragrances seen on Anna May Wong’s dressing table
oolong tea from Harney & Sons
floral porcelain tea cups from Pearl River Mart
“Silver Screen Starlets” print by Veronica Magdalene
sandalwood incense cones
lucky red lantern
Year of the Dragon zodiac ornament
How to Enter
Pre-order Not Your China Doll from your preferred indie bookstore or online retailer. (If you’ve already pre-ordered the book, you’re also eligible to enter! Or if you plan on buying a copy at one of my in-person events, you can reserve your copy in advance through the venue and enter that way, too.)
Submit your proof of purchase in this Google form and you will automatically be entered for a chance to win the Anna May Wong gift box.
Good luck!
